Director's Message

All 100 places at ELAN's multidisciplinary Grant Writing workshop with Canada Council were sold out two weeks before the event and another 40 people were put on a waiting list. The overwhelming response to the workshop proved two things: 1) that the Professional Development committee had done an excellent job of polling ELAN members to identify a subject of great interest; and 2) that a network of artists is a most effective way to transfer vital information between disciplines and generations.

The designated 'experts' at the workshop were Heather McAfee and Mandy Heggtveit from Canada Council, assisted by three experienced artists: Attila Bertelan (Film/Media Arts), Emily Doolittle (Music) and Eva Brandl (Visual Arts). Gisele Coté from CALQ also made a presentation about Quebec's culture programs. After the Canada Council team walked us through a line-by-line reading of the application form, participants broke into small groups to try writing a clear, succinct and compelling project summary. Then Heather and Mandy staged a mock jury with the help of Attila, Emily and Eva using samples of real applications to show how the jury process works and why presentation and clarity are such key factors in ensuring your project gets a fair hearing. The day's proceedings were tape recorded for the purpose of sharing the information with ELAN members who could not attend the workshop. We need help to transcribe the recorded presentations, discussions and Q&A periods. If you have an hour or two to volunteer to this project, please give us a call (514) 935-3312.

ELAN's AGM is rapidly approaching on the afternoon of November 12. Mark it in your calendar. We will be sending a dedicated email in mid-October to invite nominations for the board of directors. If you know somebody who is knowledgeable and would make a good representative for your discipline, please talk to them about standing for election to the board.

ELAN's hiring committee has been busy interviewing candidates for the position of Executive Director. The hiring committee was pleased by the number and quality of candidates and in next month's ELANews will announce the new Executive Director, as well as artists nominated for the new board of directors.

Reaching out to Musicians and Dancers

When ELAN was founded, the benefits for artists working in the language-based arts (writing, theatre, film/television) were obvious. It was far less obvious why someone working in non language-based arts (dance, visual arts, music) would benefit from joining ELAN. In 2005-06 we received a project grant from Canadian Heritage to contact visual artists to survey their needs and explore how ELAN could best collaborate with RAAV and CARFAC. The project resulted in hundreds of visual artists subsequently joining.

ELAN has now received a project grant from Canadian Heritage to explore the needs of the music and dance communities. Music in particular is a diverse and fragmented sector with little overlap between classical, blues, jazz, rock, and electro acoustic scenes, although we have discovered that Myspace is an excellent way to make contact with musicians. Over the fall and early winter we will be surveying our current ELAN members and then contacting non-member musicians and dancers to find out how ELAN can help them pursue their careers.

The Arts Services Kit

The number of service providers in the Arts Services Kit (ASK) recently passed 250. More and more ELAN members are finding partners in ASK to help them with accounting, career advice, space rental, computer expertise and professional services. If you need help, you should know where to ASK.

Congratulations to everyone involved with this outstanding production! The 2007-08 season at The Leanor and Alvin Segal Theatre begins in October with The Diary of Anne Frank, directed by Marcia Kash.

Denis Coupal

Denis Coupal's recent translation of Glenn Gould: Universe of a Genius, a book of essays first published in 1988 in French, will be published in October 2007 by Momentum. Glenn Gould: The Sounds of Genius, a major exhibit at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, opened to the public on September 28, 2007. This is the first in-depth look of this kind at the greatest pianist of the twentieth Century. Denis Coupal was on Ideum.ca's design team via his small company Monument Communications Inc; responsible for the initial business and creative organization of the project and later for experience design. The exhibit is on through the year and then will travel internationally.

Anna Fuerstenberg

Anna Fuerstenberg recently performed Saidye's Millenium in the recital hall of the King Centre in Denver, where she is directing her adaptation of The Tale of Two Cities; a British tale of the French Revolution with American actors, written and directed by a Canadian. Who says irony is dead? She will rush back to Montreal where Crossroads will open at the CENTAUR on October 24th.

Geordie Productions

Since taking off in September, Geordie's Annual School Tour has already traveled out to the Lower North Shore and will return this month for 5 Mainstage performances of A Promise is a Promise, by Barbara Poggemiller at the D.B. Clarke Theatre (October 12–15) before heading out for a tour around the Maritimes. Fundraising to Bring Hana's Suitcase to Montreal is still underway with a new Facebook group, "Geordie's Hana's Suitcase fundraising campaign". The play, written by Montrealer Emil Sher, was also featured on the cover of Concordia University Magazine's fall issue. Hana's Suitcase will open on Geordie's Mainstage on November 22nd.

Cheryl Anne Neill

ELAN has lost one of its quirkiest members. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Cheryl on September 4 after a brief illness. Cheryl played a vital role in the arts community and in education. Friend and mentor to many, she was passionate in her encouragement of others to reach their potential. Fiercely determined, she believed in the power of the individual to bring about change. In lieu of flowers, anyone who shared in the joy of Cheryl's life is encouraged to support the arts, write a poem, sing a song, dance until it feels good.

Raquel Rivera

Just released is Orphan Ahwak (Orca), a children's historic adventure novel by Raquel Rivera. This follows the June release of Raquel's non-fiction picture book, Arctic Adventures: Tales from the Lives of Inuit Artists (Groundwood), recently reviewed in the Toronto Star: "Rivera's unpretentious storytelling is perfectly suited to these tales, which resonate with mythic force … evidence that an alien way of life can be powerfully transmuted and shared."
