Director's Message

This month we've launched our Arts Services Kit (ASK) on the website. I'd like to thank all the members who have already posted their services there and those who have contacted us with suggestions to help iron out wrinkles. The website is designed to be as user-friendly and maintenance-free as possible, but sometimes a situation arises which we did not anticipate, or a particular browser reacts in an unexpected way. Glitches are all part of the process of building a new organization and creating innovative services. It is encouraging that the consensus has been overwhelmingly positive. I hope you will all take a moment to explore ASK to connect with service providers, funders and resources that can help you in your lives as artists.

The website is an important part of ELAN but the focus for 2007 is to stimulate live encounters between members. Meetings are being organized where ELAN's board sees the greatest interest or need. The Advocacy Committee began meeting in January and identified a host of issues that need to be addressed, ranging from the financial crisis that threatens Studio 303 and Theatre La Chapelle to cutbacks of DFAIT for international touring programs. If you are interested in arts advocacy, see below for how you can get involved.

The first meeting of the Social Group will be a pre-Valentine's get together on February 13. See below for the time and place. The Social Group deliberately has no purpose beyond giving ELAN members a place to meet in a relaxed atmosphere. ELAN's board will be there in force to meet with members new and old. We plan to make this a regular event. Please come out and join us.

What's New?

ASK (Arts Services Kit)

The Arts Services Kit (ASK) is now fully functional thanks to the hard work of our ASK project team: Audrey Finkelstein, Atif Siddiqi, Deborah Osmond and Ingrid Wissink. The Services Providers section was launched in December. The Government Funders and Foundations section was launched on January 1st and finally we have launched the third and final section—Arts Service Organizations. Both the Funders section and the Service Organizations section are accessible by discipline. Each funder or organization is listed with a short description. If the teaser sounds interesting you can access a longer description and link to the website. ASK is designed to provide easy access to a wide world of useful services and information. All you need to do is ASK.

Action Groups

The Professional Development Group

On Monday, February 5th, the newly minted Professional Development Committee, co-chaired by Lori Schubert and Victoria Leblanc, will meet to refine the ideas raised at ELAN's AGM last November. The goal for the meeting is to narrow those ideas into an action plan, and come away with a solid recommendation to the Board for our first Professional Development Activity.

The meeting will take place at the Visual Arts Centre, 350 Victoria Avenue in Westmount. (It's just about a block below Sherbrooke Street, and not far from Vendôme metro.)

Please RSVP to the ELAN office by sending an email to admin@quebec-elan.org with Professional Development in the subject line.

The Social Events Group

This inaugural meeting of the Social Events Group will be a pre-Valentine's 5 à 7 at the Empress Theatre (the old Cinema V at 5560 Sherbrooke ouest in NDG.) Since we have no idea how many to cater for, please RSVP to the ELAN office by sending an email to admin@quebec-elan.org with Valentine's Get Together in the subject line

Advocacy Committee

If you have news you want to flag, or if you wish to participate in future meetings of the Advocacy Committee, please send an email to admin@quebec-elan.org with Advocacy in the subject line.

Telefilm Canada

Telefilm Canada recently launched two new IPOLC initiatives for the development of English-language comedy productions in Quebec: a) the Official Language Minority Communities Strategic Initiative: Development of English-Language Feature Films in Quebec and b) the Official Language Minority Communities Strategic Initiative: Development of English-Language Drama Television in Quebec.

The objective of both initiatives is to give eligible Anglophone writers, writer-directors and producers working in Quebec the opportunity to develop market-driven comedy feature film and television projects, and to expand the available pool of these creators in Quebec. Please note that there are separate initiatives for feature film and television participants.

Stage 1: Market Immersion in Montreal

The Market Immersion is designed to increase participants' awareness of the market's needs through panel sessions, as well as group and one-on-one meetings with decision-makers. The group of decision-makers will be made up of 10 Anglophone representatives from the industry and Telefilm.

Stage 2: Script Development Lab outside of Montreal

Right after the Market Immersion, selected teams of writers and producers will participate in a three-day residential Script Development Lab. At this lab, script consultants will provide feedback to each team on the strengths and weaknesses of their projects, and will assist them to identify two key scenes to be further developed at Stage 3.

Stage 3: Rewriting

Following the Script Lab, writers will have eight weeks to develop and refine the synopsis of their projects, and to rewrite the two key scenes.

During this period, each producer will receive a recoupable advance of $5,000 of which at least $2,000 will be given to the writer. Each writer will be allowed up to 10 hours of script consultation to be used within the eight-week period. It is required that all participants use the services of the script consultants. Consulting costs will be covered by the producer's funding.

After this period, participants will submit to Telefilm and the script consultants a revised and detailed synopsis of the project as well as the two key scenes. All material will be assessed by the script consultants on behalf of Telefilm.

Stage 4: Development funding for fiscal year 2007–08

A selection committee will recommend one of the five selected projects for development funding. Selection will be based on a progress report from the script consultants and the final material provided to Telefilm.

Development funding provided by Telefilm will be in the form of a recoupable advance, which may not exceed the lesser of $20,000 or 75% of the producer's approved development budget.

Application deadline:

Eligible applicants must complete the application form available on Telefilm's website and deliver it, with all required documents, to the Corporation's head office by 5:00 PM on February 13, 2007.

For details concerning eligible applicants and projects, please visit the Funds and Programs section of the Telefilm Canada website.
