(Announcement) Four projects selected for StoryNet Documentary Challenge funding

On behalf of the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network (QAHN) and the English Language Arts Network (ELAN) I am pleased to announce that four film proposals submitted as part of the 2012 StoryNet Documentary Challenge have been selected for production financing.
As one of three judges who reviewed all 51 submissions, I can tell you that making this choice was no small feat, given the variety of powerful story ideas, creative narrative approaches and overall high quality of the projects we considered. The passion with which Quebec filmmakers and artists responded to the StoryNet challenge was truly impressive and these qualities are revealed in the final selection.
Climate change in Quebec’s coastal towns and villages; the allure of shipwreck lore in the Magdelan Islands; one woman’s poignant, ground-breaking legal fight to ban the use of lawn-care pesticides; and a day in the life of a contemporary Mohawk community: these are the projects that StoryNet will help to produce in the months ahead. And they’re in the hands of talented storytelling teams.
StoryNet intends to commission works from the following directors in 2012:
- Susan Woodfine (Rimouski), for the web documentary entitled, Joan’s World;
- Tracey Deer (Kahnawake), for the experimental documentary, Mohawk Rhapsody;
- Robert Rooney (Wakefield), for the documentary entitled, A Chemical Reaction;
- Sharif Mirshak (Montreal), for the documentary entitled, Legends of the Magdelan Islands.
Congratulations to the award finalists and to everyone who accepted the StoryNet challenge. We wish you the best of success and urge you to continue seeking support to bring your very worthy projects into production.
